I am doing pre-marital coaching (can’t call it counseling in my state unless you are a professional counselor) for a few couples in my church.  I am always interested in what topics others cover, so I thought I would share my overall premise and the resources I used.

Step 1: Prepare Enrich Test:

There are quite a few good tests out there.  Prepare Enrich and Focus seem to the be the ones that come most highly recommended.  I use the Prepare Enrich because I was trained on it during seminary.

It costs the couple $35 to take online.  Each person takes their own test.  Once they both have completed it, I get the results and they get a copy as well.

I like it because it shows their relationship strengths and growth areas.  Prepare Enrich deals with the following topics:

  • 12 Relationship Scales — communication, conflict resolution, roles, sexuality, finances, spiritual beliefs and more
  • 5 SCOPE Personality Scales
  • 4 Couple and Family Scales — based on the Circumplex Model
  • 4 Relationship Dynamic Scales

I find that taking the test actually sparks conversation about crucial topics that were covered in it before we even meet for premarital counseling.
